Our Story
SOIL-XR is an EU-funded project that aims to improve soil literacy and environmental awareness through immersive XR technologies, citizen science, and participatory education.
The project brings together partners from Cyprus and Italy to create innovative Living Labs where students, educators, researchers, and local communities can explore soil health through hands-on activities and interactive learning experiences.
By combining environmental education with augmented reality and community participation, SOIL-XR seeks to make soil science more accessible, engaging, and relevant for younger generations.
Motivation
Soil plays a fundamental role in biodiversity, climate regulation, food systems, and water cycles, yet it often remains overlooked in education and public awareness. In Mediterranean regions especially, soil degradation, erosion, and desertification are growing environmental challenges. Despite this, many young people have limited opportunities to engage with soil science in interactive and meaningful ways.
SOIL-XR was created to address this gap by combining immersive technology, citizen science, and experiential learning to encourage environmental awareness, sustainability, and long-term soil stewardship.
